Reader to Reader Donates Thousands of Books to Mississippi’s Public Libraries

Those who use their library regularly know how great it is to find new books on the shelves. That’s why we are so pleased to announce Reader to Reader’s Mississippi Book Project is bringing thousands of new mystery novels to public libraries throughout Mississippi.

The donation comes thanks to the generosity of book publisher SOHO Press, which has donated thousands of its mystery titles for the effort.

“We are very grateful to SOHO Press for making this donation possible,” Reader to Reader executive director David Mazor said. “SOHO Press has so many outstanding titles and series that mystery fans love, and we are excited that we can bring them to libraries throughout Mississippi.”

Reader to Reader’s Mississippi Book project was launched in 2002, and has brought tens of thousands of books to schools and public libraries across the state.

$69,000 in Basic Mathematics Textbooks Donated to Mississippi College

We are pleased to announce that Tougaloo College in Tougaloo, Mississippi has received $69,000 worth of the college-level textbook, Basic Mathematics.

The brand-new textbooks are being made available for donation by the author, Steve Slavin.

“This is a tremendous resource and we will also be giving out thousands more of these excellent textbooks to colleges and high schools across the U.S. and overseas,” David Mazor, founding executive director of Reader to Reader, says. “We thank professor Slavin for his extraordinary generosity.”

Professor Slavin made similar donations in 2008 and 2009.

$36,000 in Textbooks Heading to Mississippi

Reader To Reader is pleased to announce that Tougaloo College in Tougaloo, Mississippi will be receiving an additional $36,000 worth of the textbook, Basic Mathematics.

The donation is on top of $6,000 worth of Basic Mathematics that were donated this past summer. The brand-new textbooks are being made available for donation by the author, Steve Slavin.

“This book is so good, and has gotten such a response from students and teachers that we want as many copies as we can get,” Prof. Demetria White says. “It’s very detailed and it a very good resource book. We want to thank Reader To Reader and Dr. Slavin for making this donation possible.”

Founded in 1869, Tougaloo College is a private, historically African-American, liberal arts institution, accessible to all persons regardless of race, ethnic origin, religion or creed.

Tougaloo College played a very active role during the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. “Tougaloo College’s leadership, courage in opening its campus to the Freedom Riders and other Civil Rights workers and leaders, and its bravery in supporting a movement whose time had come, helped to change the economic, political and social fabric of the state of Mississippi and the nation.”

Dear Mr. Mazor,

The Noxubee County Public Library Board of Trustees and I want to thank you and Reader to Reader for the excellent books that you have sent to us. Our patrons have really enjoyed the books, especially the hard backs and paperbacks of adult fiction. They have asked me to keep the westerns, mystery, cookbooks, biographies and romance books coming. It has helped bring back some of our adult readers to the library.

The smaller children have enjoyed the books and are looking forward to reading the new books. They enjoy easy fiction - 1st to 3rd grade books. We even have some of the ages 8-12 years old enjoying reading.

Noxubee County Library is in a rural area and sometimes it is hard for us to get the people into the library and to get them to read the different types of books that we offer, but thanks to Reader to Reader they are READING BOOKS!

Some history on the library:

“Erected in 1907 as the county jail, this three-storied brick structure was built in the Romanesque style of architecture. It was used as a place of incarceration for seventy years before being abandoned.

In 1982 a group of interested citizens began a fund-raising project to restore the property and to have the building listed on the National Register of Historic Places and to be declared a Mississippi Landmark, both distinctions insuring a protected status.”
