Computers Donated to Uganda Health Organization

Step Up Uganda is a small all-volunteer organization that engages members of the local community who have suffered through 20 years of war with the Lord's Resistance Army to rebuild their community, to heal from the trauma of war and poverty and to develop the capacity of its medical providers to prevent and reduce infant and maternal mortality. The organization is located in an impoverished region with few resources and many threats to health and well-being, such as malaria, dysentery, dengue fever. The computers are being used by local health workers to access up-to-date health information.

Laptops, Books, and More on the Way to Zambia

Blessed Ngoma is working to open a community center in Zambia, and we are delighted to help with the project. 

We are donating laptops, books, puzzles, games and even a laptop projector.

Blessed Ngoma is graduate student at the University of Massachusetts and works as a Permanency Coordinator at Becket Family of Services in Brattleboro, Vermont. 

He is working with his friends back in his native Zambia to open the center in early 2019.

Laptops Donated Around the World

Laptops are on their way to villages in Bolivia, Ecuador and Zambia, all courtesy of  Reader to Reader's computer donation program.

The laptops heading to Ecuador are being hand-carried by high school students that are spending their year studying abroad.

The laptops for Bolivia arrived earlier this summer. Here is a family in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, enjoying their laptop donated by Reader to Reader.

Our laptop donations to Bolivia included three laptops to Parque Machía, a wildlife sanctuary.

And Blessed Ngoma is working to open a community center in Zambia, so we are donating laptops, books, puzzles, games and even a laptop projector.

More iMac Computers Ready for Donation

We just got in a large supply of computers that we are ready to donate, including beautiful 27" iMacs!

Reader to Reader's Computer Donation Program donates new computers, tablets and e-readers, and refurbished Dell and Apple computers to schools with strong need for access to technology.

Computer labs have been built in New York City, on the Navajo Nation, the Hopi Nation, western Massachusetts, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ghana, Kenya, Kosovo, Nepal, Nicaragua, Nigeria, and Trinidad & Tobago.

New computers, including laptop and desktop computers, tablets and e-readers, are reserved for schools and projects already participating in Reader to Reader programs.

Used computers have been refurbished and are completely ready to run right out of the box.

Reader to Reader's Computer Donation Program donates new and refurbished computers, tablet computers, and e-readers. Computer labs have been built in the Navajo Nation, Hopi Nation, Massachusetts, New York, Ghana, Kosovo, Nigeria, and Trinidad & Tobago.

In addition, computers have been donated to projects in Bolivia, The Bahamas, Costa Rica, Kenya, Nepal, Nicaragua, and other states and countries.

Donating Laptops to Alabama Students

The group is guided by SpeakFirst’s Mary Byrne, formerly an intern and reading mentor at Reader to Reader during her years at Amherst College. She’s now doing great work in Alabama.

Computers on their way to Bolivian village

Two refurbished Dell Optiplex computers have begun their journey to Arani, Bolivia.  The computers will be used to teaching coding to teenagers living in the village.

The donation is part of Reader to Reader’s partnership with the KUSIKUY, a social enterprise business that is working to retail the alpaca fiber clothing crafted by the village’s knitters.

As part of the partnership, Reader to Reader is donating computers, Spanish-language children’s books, and a  collection of business marketing books that have been requested in order to help support the educational needs of local entrepreneurs.

At an altitude of 9,400 feet, the village of Arani is located in the center of Bolivia, and has a population of  3,512.

Computers and Books Donated to Substance Abuse Center

Reader to Reader is pleased to donate computers and books to support the new Holyoke Recovery Support Center in Holyoke, Massachusetts.

The Center is a warm and safe environment where peers empower folks in any path of recovery, so that they may work to strengthen their recovery in order to become a more productive member of society.

Computers on their way to Togo, West Africa

A batch of refurbished Dell OptiPlex computers has begun their journey to Togo, West Africa, for a new computer lab. The computers were donated by Reader to Reader as part of our Computer Donation Program, which has built computer labs in Costa Rica, Ghana, Nicaragua, Trinidad and Tobago, and in the U.S. in Arizona, Massachusetts, and New Mexico.

Sand Creek Elementary Gets iMac

Sand Creek Elementary in Colorado Springs, Colorado is getting an iMac computer courtesy of Reader to Reader.

The computer will be used for a new filmmaking class, among other uses.

Computer Lab Generates Excitement in Saviefe-Deme, Ghana

A new computer lab is up and running in the rural village of Saviefe-Deme in Ghana. Classes are being offered for students of all ages.

The lab was created this past year by John Barber and Ghana ACT in partnership with Reader to Reader.

Reader to Reader donated refurbished Dell Optipex 720 computers and Ghana ACT transported them to Ghana and set up the lab.

This June, Reader to Reader donated three additional flat-screen monitors and we are working on donating a number of additional refurbished Dell computers.

The computer lab is located at the town’s middle school.

Reader to Reader’s Computer Donation program is run in partnership with Amherst College and provides refurbished Dell Optiplex computers and iMacs to schools and libraries throughout the United States and across the globe.

Another Computer Lab Unveiled in Ghana

With the help of Reader to Reader’s Computer Donation Program, a new computer lab has opened at the middle school in Saviefe-Deme, Ghana, as a part of Reader to Reader’s ongoing Ghana Project.

Residents of Saviefe-Deme were invited to tour the lab and on the day these photos were taken the whole town was going through it.

Reader to Reader’s Computer Donation program is run in partnership with Amherst College and provides refurbished Dell Optiplex computers and iMacs to schools and libraries across the United States and across the globe.

15,000 Books, Computers, on the Way to Navajo Nation

Seven months of book collecting, including hundreds of hours sorting and packing boxes, came to a conclusion with a 3-hour frenzy of loading, as the latest shipment of books headed off to the Navajo Nation Library in Window Rock, Arizona.

The shipment of 15,000 books and 21 computers will benefit libraries, schools, community centers, senior centers, and correctional facilities all across the 27,000 square-mile Navajo Nation.

“We are so excited here at the high school we can hardly contain ourselves,” said Susan Clement, principal of St. Michael Indian High School in St. Michaels, Arizona. She adds that she is expanding her school library into an additional room in anticipation of the 69 boxes of books and 5 computers that will be coming from Reader to Reader for the library. An additional 17 computers will be used to build a new computer lab for the school.

The fourth shipment in Reader to Reader’s Navajo Nation Book Drive, the donation brings the total donation to 60,000 books to date. Reader to Reader’s ultimate goal is 100,000 books.

Irving Nelson, the director of the Navajo Nation Library, flew to Hartford, Connecticut and rented a truck in order to transport the books on their 5-day journey to the Navajo Nation. His 12-hour days of driving are shared with library employee Everett Tsosie.

“We are so pleased to work in partnership with the Navajo Nation Library in order to bring this valuable resource to the people of the Navajo Nation.” Said David Mazor, Reader to Reader’s founder. “This donation has a value of over $200,000 and working together we have been able to provide this rich resource very economically.”

Based in Amherst, Reader to Reader is a global literacy organization that has donated 5 million books across the United States and in 14 countries.

A Library Transformed at St. Michael Indian School

We are so pleased to see our work paying off for the students at St. Michael Indian High School in St. Michaels, Arizona.

Working with librarian Melissa Coles, we have replaced half the books in her library. This summer we will replace many of the rest. We will also be donating 5 Dell Optiplex 620 computers to replace the one antiquated computer the library currently has. Gone are the out-dated, tired, threadbare books that were of little relevance or interest to their students. Now they have a modern and relevant collection. The new fantasy section is just one example.

Assessing Need on the Navajo Nation

Progress in Kosovo

We recently received photos from Adi Matoshi on the progress of the Fisnik Matoshi Library in Pristina, Kosovo.

The project helps the Gjergj Fishta School create a library where students feel welcome and are inspired to read. The goal is to fill the library with books, and provide the students with computers and school supplies. A large amount of books and 8 computers were shipped to Kosovo last summer.
